We are so excited to be hosting a book signing for two Tennessee authors this Saturday, Feb. 11! Susan Gregg Gilmore and Lisa Patton will be here at 1pm, signing books, answering your questions, and leading the fun.

Gilmore and Patton both write of the strength and grace of Southern women. While their books are perfect for fans of Fannie Flagg or Lee Smith, they are great writers in their own right. These novels may not be love stories, per se, but signed copies would make great Valentine’s Day gifts for the Southern women in your life. (Or you can plan ahead for Mother’s Day!)

Susan Gregg Gilmore is the author of Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen, which was a big hit with the Reading Rock Book Club last summer, and The Improper Life of Bezellia Grove.

Lisa Patton

Lisa Patton is the author of Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’Easter and its sequel Yankee Doodle Dixie, which was released last fall.

Reading Rock Books will be hosting a read-a-thon on Saturday, July 16, from 9am to 9pm, to raise money for Relay for Life of Dickson County. We are very excited about this event and hope lots of people will come and read for a great cause!

Want to participate? Here’s what you need to do:

  • Get an entry form. You can pick one up at the store or online by emailing Laura at laura@thereadingrock.com or downloading the form here.
  • Decide when you want to read. We’ll be holding the event from 9am to 9pm and you may come read at the store whenever and for however long you like during that timeframe. Deciding when you will be reading will make things much easier for your sponsors. (They might pledge 1 dollar per minute, if you’ll be reading for an hour or 25 cents per minute if you’ll be reading for 4 hours.)
  • Find sponsors! Sponsors may choose to donate an amount based on either the number of pages you read or number of minutes read during your allotted time. Sponsors may also choose to put a cap on donations. Record all their pledges on your entry form.
  • Come read on July 16!
  • Collect donations from your sponsors and bring them back to Reading Rock Books by Aug. 1st.

Be sure to connect to the Read for Life read-a-thon through our Facebook event page to get the latest news and updates!

On Friday, March 4th, at 7pm, Reading Rock Books will be having its largest author event to date, with authors J.T. Ellison and Sophie Littlefield.

J.T. Ellison will be coming to Dickson for her third event at Reading Rock. Ellison is the author of the Taylor Jackson mystery series, all of which take place in Nashville. Her stop at Reading Rock is part of her book tour to promote her newest release, So Close the Hand of Death, which is the sixth book in the series. All of her titles will be available at Reading Rock prior to and during the event. We are very pleased to welcome J.T. back!

Ellison Books

Sophie Littlefield has written several books for adults and teens. Her Stella Hardesty series of crime novels for adults includes A Bad Day for Sorry, which was nominated for an Edgar Award for best first novel, and A Bad Day for Pretty. She is also the author of Banished, a book for teens with paranormal themes. She will be at Reading Rock promoting Aftertime, the first book in a new series for adults.

Our most recent newsletter is available online here. This issue is devoted to J.T. Ellison and Sophie Littlefield. In this newsletter, you can see what our customers have to say about J.T. Ellison or read our recent interview with Sophie Littlefield.

The sixth volume of the Taylor Jackson series, So Close the Hand of Death, starts out right where The Immortals leaves off. Days after the Halloween massacre in Green Hills, homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson is off to North Carolina in hot pursuit of her next case. Things have gotten incredibly personal for Taylor.

Those familiar with J.T. Ellison’s Taylor Jackson series know that all the books take place in Nashville and that they’re all well-researched, hard-to-put-down thrillers. This new volume is no exception and is arguably the best one in the series so far. The action never slows down, which definitely keeps this reader at the edge of her seat, but it’s the characters that give the series substance and heart.

Also by J.T. Ellison:
All the Pretty Girls
14
Judas Kiss
The Cold Room
The Immortals

Note: While it isn’t technically necessary to read the Taylor Jackson books in chronological order, I’d highly recommend reading 14 before this one.

Aftertime Aftertime is the first in a new series by author Sophie Littlefield. Set in a dystopian future  filled with zombies and gun-wielding citizens, Littlefield’s newest book covers popular territory. Zombies have long been a part of pop culture, but never more than now, with the rising popularity of books like The Walking Dead, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and, of course, The Zombie Survival Guide. Still, there’s no question that Aftertime sets itself apart. This isn’t the typical, people-holed-up-in-a-mall zombie story, with characters whose only concerns are their next meal or the stumbling undead bumping into the windows downstairs. No, in Sophie Littlefield’s hands, the post-apocalyptic landscape is just another way to explore human character.

Cass Dollar has been through the unthinkable and wakes up, deserted, in a field. She fights her way back to what’s left of civilization, in the hope that her daughter is still in the safe place where Cass last saw her. The journey that Cass undergoes and the friendships she makes along the way are both colored by Cass’ past. While Cass occasionally remembers, with regret, the small conveniences and details of modern life, such as the sound of a toilet flushing or a particular flower now extinct, her life before was not a pleasant one–except for her memories of her daughter Ruthie. Cass, a recovering alcoholic, dealt with her share of monsters before zombies were ever a problem.

Sophie Littlefield has created an exciting new series that takes on and surpasses all the typical themes of post-apocalyptic literature. Aftertime is an in-depth character study of a mother and recovering addict struggling with her sense of belonging and self-worth…that just happens to take place in a zombie-infested roadtrip through California.
