Have you been listening to our book reviews on WDKN? As part of “The Local Gourmet,” which airs the 1st and 3rd Saturday at 1pm, Reading Rock Books brings you food-related book reviews. Here are all the ones we discussed in May’s shows:
5/1/10 – Amy discussed Family Dinners by Janet Peterson
Often we all get caught up in our day-to-day grind and rely on fast food when cooking a meal at home might be just as convenient (and definitely more nutricious). With tips and tricks on bringing your family to the table, Peterson’s practical cookbook will help you cook great meals and get reacquainted with your loved ones.
5/15/10 – Laura discussed Mama, Is It Summer Yet? by Nikki McClure and Feeding the Whole Family by Cynthia Lair with illustrations by Nikki McClure
Mama, Is It Summer Yet?, which was just released this month, is Nikki McClure’s newest book. McClure paired her gorgeous papercut illustrations with an endearing back-and-forth conversation between mother and child, as each enjoys the spring and anticipates the summer to follow. Highly recommended!
Feeding the Whole Family is the perfect baby shower gift. Cynthia Lair explains how to feed your family wholesome foods, with tips on how your children can help in the kitchen and a section on transitioning baby to solids. Her thesis, if a cookbook can have one, is that you need only cook one meal for your family, including baby, saving you money and time while nourishing your child. For example, when cooking the Mexican Bean and Corn Casserole (page 154), which is loaded with veggies, save back some of the zucchini to steam and puree for your little one. It also has Nikki McClure’s papercut illustrations sprinkled throughout.
Don’t forget to check out the House Blend blog for recipes featured on the show.
